Hiring managers spend less than a minute reviewing a resume, if you don’t stand out you may miss a possible job opportunity! With this in mind, finding the perfect job prospect may take some time. Starting out with a web portfolio is the perfect initiative and helps distinguish you from others.

Networking is about building relationships.  Thanks to online networking, reaching out to other possible contacts and presenting your Career Web Portfolio may be the key to your success!  A good career strategy may involve researching specific managers and company’s on one of many social sites out there and emailing directly.   If you already own an account within popular sites like LinkedIn, ZoomInfo and Facebook there may be a chance that one of your friends or contacts also has a contact in that specific career field you are looking for.

An extension of a web portfolio may indeed be a blog. Blogs are also a great tool that can help make others aware of your experience.  Only link a blog if it is relevant to your career field, a personal blog about another personal interest would not be a good idea. A possible employer may not want to know what you had for dinner the night before or your plans this weekend. Consider Blogging about your career field industry trends, latest news, articles and latest Career Portfolio additions. It is important that you consider your Blogs privacy settings as other users may post unprofessional statements.

Over time followers will become aware of your expertise and as you gain exposure,  your personal  brand will be enhanced.

A clever tool allowing you to inform friends, colleagues and contacts updates with your everyday activities.  Twitter, unlike other social websites, is quite unique and very useful for locating job referrals.  ‘Tweeting’ your Career Portfolio may attract the attention of another user that might be able to assist you refine your job search.

..but remember…

Using social media is a big plus, however always make sure that you are consistent with your message and this is translated across all mediums.  Have a plan, work at it and most importantly, be patient!
